Awakening Your "Third Eye"

The "third eye" symbolizes a state of enlightenment or the evocation of mental images having deeply personal spiritual or psychological significance. The third eye is often associated with religious visions, clairvoyance, the ability to observe chakras and auras, precognition, and out-of-body experiences. People who are claimed to have the capacity to utilize their third eyes are sometimes known as seers.

Since the beginning of recorded history, we have heard rumblings about a “third eye.” This legend extends to major world religions today, as well as to civilizations as ancient as Egypt. It is described as humanity’s ability to Connect with the Higher realms, contacting and interact with other beings, and even achieving higher levels of consciousness or being. Normally, these would be closed off to us, but the idea is that it takes work, practice, and discipline to truly reap the benefits of this vision.

The "Third Eye" in Ancient Traditions

Egyptian Traditions

The spiritual act of “Awakening The Third Eye”—still taught in Eastern traditions like Hinduism—was the central doctrine of the ancient Egyptian religion for thousands of years.  While many ancient cultures were still in their infancy, the Egyptians had already been creating mysterious images of a single Eye—the Third Eye—for centuries, if not millennia.

Dharmic spiritual traditions

In Dharmic spiritual traditions from India, the third eye refers to the ajna (or brow) chakra. The third eye refers to the gate that leads to inner realms and spaces of higher consciousness.

Hinduism

In Hinduism, the third eye is said to be located around the middle of the forehead, slightly above the junction of the eyebrows. The Third Eye is a key concept in Hinduism’s Kundalini Yoga, which teaches initiates to “balance” or “unify” our lunar ida left-bodily side with our solar pingala right-bodily side.

Taoism

In Taoism and many traditional Chinese religious sects such as Chan (called Zen in Japanese), "third eye training" involves focusing attention on the point between the eyebrows with the eyes closed, and while the body is in various qigong postures. The goal of this training is to allow students to tune into the correct "vibration" of the universe and gain a solid foundation on which to reach more advanced meditation levels. Taoism teaches that the third eye, also called the mind's eye, is situated between the two physical eyes, and expands up to the middle of the forehead when opened. Taoism claims that the third eye is one of the main energy centers of the body located at the sixth Chakra, forming a part of the main meridian, the line separating left and right hemispheres of the body. In Taoist alchemical traditions, the third eye is the frontal part of the "Upper Dan Tien" (upper cinnabar field) and is given the evocative name "muddy pellet".

According to the Christian teaching

The light of the body is the eye: if therefore your eye be single, your whole body shall be full of light. But if your eye be evil, thy whole body shall be full of darkness. If therefore the light that is in you be darkness, how great is that darkness! No man can serve two masters: for either he will hate the one, and love the other; or else he will hold to the one, and despise the other. You cannot serve God and mammon. (Mat 6:22-24)

According to Jesus, we must have a SINGLE EYE TO GOD. Note that if my, "eye is single," my entire body – or, if you will, my entire life – will be full of light.

How To Open Your Third Eye

Ever wondered how to open your third eye, home to your “sixth sense?” Your intuition and higher wisdom come alive when this energy center is fully open and balanced. Unfortunately, for most of us, developing our third eye chakra and its abilities is challenging at best, and may even sometimes seem out of reach. Here are a few simple steps and recommendations to help.

4 Proven strategies for awakening the third eye

First, we’re going to describe the most important guidelines that will help you develop your third eye.

Cultivate silence

Foster the silence of the mind, whether it’s through meditation, just sitting calmly in nature, or being absorbed in your favorite art or sport practice.

Why? Because third eye perception elevates your senses to more subtle levels. Some call it “the space in between”, psychic abilities, the realm of the invisible. To be able to listen to the messages and information that comes through your third eye, you should be ready to perceive the whisper of its wisdom. If your mind is busy or noisy, you might miss its main message.

Hone your intuition

There are many ways to cultivate your intuition. The third eye is the center of insight, vision, and higher wisdom. So what about getting acquainted with your dreams and their meanings, perhaps giving a try at lucid dreaming, getting to know how to read a horoscope or tarot cards? Find new ways to intuit into your daily life activities.

Why? Because the third eye is the main seat of higher levels of perception and intuition. One way to look at it can be “fake it until you make it.” In other words, be curious, learn about these intuitive techniques. In time, these otherwise esoteric practices will appear more familiar, and you will gain more confidence in your own abilities.

You don’t need to take this seriously – actually, the opposite is recommended. Have fun, explore, and most importantly, keep your mind and chakras open to possibility and wonder.

Nurture your creativity

Let your creativity flow freely by focusing on specific activities or letting your imagination loose. For instance, start learning a new art or craft; don’t try to be perfect, just let your inspiration run through your hands and be ready to be surprised by the results.

Why? Creativity is a very efficient way to loosen your rational mind – you know, the mental chatter that comments every step you make to see whether it’s right or wrong, that tends to control every action with a specific agenda and intended outcome.

When you calm the part of your mind that wants to be in charge of how reality should be and leverage your creativity to open up possibilities, your third eye capacity has more space to unfold and blossom.

Ground yourself

For most of us, it might not be obvious that in order to open our third eye abilities, we need to first land both our feet on the ground. Also note the importance of opening up gradually, building reliable foundations first that will allow you to have proper discernment and interpret your extrasensory perceptions with as much clarity as possible.

Why? Because we need to have enough energy running through our whole body and energetic system to support a healthy opening of subtle channels of perception. When the third eye gets activated, the information that comes through might appear rather unusual, unfamiliar, or simply disturbing to the common mind.

Being grounded and having enough energy allows us to expand into subtle dimensions of perception. It can help us open up unhindered and avoid the common negative symptoms of third eye opening, such as feeling disoriented or confused.

5 Definitive Signs Your Third Eye Is Opening

1) Dull sensation of pressure between the eyebrows

Typically when the third eye begins to manifest on a deeper level, there is a corresponding awareness of sensation between the eyebrows. It may feel like someone is lightly touching you at this point, or warmth. Many times this sensation can appear out of nowhere- whether or not you’re having spiritual thoughts. It’s almost as if it’s a reminder to pull you back into that spiritual mindset.

2) Foresight

Spiritual development naturally increases the intuition. Intuition is the ability to know something will happen before it actually does; it’s a subtle feeling that comes and goes without warning. But over time, this feeling can get stronger and stronger, and become a guiding principle in our lives.

3) Gradual, persistent change

More than anything, getting in tune with the spiritual eye gradually changes our personality and perspective in life. It’s a gradual change that creates positive changes, without being forced or shamed into it. You do it because you want to- not because it’s required or recommended. You can see it in the way treat others especially; are you less selfish, more forgiving?

These are the things to watch out for.

4) Deeper connection to an inner self-reliance

You know yourself, but do you know your Self? In the east, there’s a big distinction between the self and the Self. It’s the difference between thinking you’re a personality with likes and dislikes and thinking you’re a spark of the universe. That kind of distinction will completely change the way you view yourself and the world and give you a new sense of strength and confidence. If you’re getting a calm, clear feeling that the world is completely open to you and your potential is limitless, this is a sign you’re identifying more with the Self and connecting to the third eye.

5) Lights

Certainly, many of the things above are subtle; they’re not always immediately apparent or overwhelming.

But the vision of lights is much more apparent.

When concentrating deeply on the spiritual eye (such as in meditation), the light of the spiritual eye may appear. It can be lots of different circular shapes and lights…but when it’s in full manifestation, it takes on the form of a white five-pointed star in a dark blue sphere, surrounded by a golden circle. This final form of the spiritual eye has been known for centuries in many cultures worldwide and celebrated in all kinds of artwork and religious works.

5 Herbs to Open Your Third Eye

Herbs work on subtle vibrational, emotional, and spiritual levels with perhaps even more profound results than those we can measure in the bodily realm. When working with herbs to connect with spirit, or for spiritual purposes, it is recommended to use smaller doses and to carefully set intentions. Plants are our teachers; listen closely to their gifts of universal and spiritual illumination. As always, please make sure you source your herbs from reputable, sustainable businesses using organic and/or biodynamic cultivation practices.

Reishi for Consciousness Enhancement

Reishi mushroom (Ganoderma lucidum) is powerful in many ways, and has been revered in Traditional Chinese Medicine for millennia. Reishi has long been considered a ‘Shen tonic,’ or an herb that opens the heart and nourishes the spirit. The Chinese name for Reishi--Lingzhi--translates roughly to mean “mushroom of spiritual immortality” or “numinous botanical.” Reishi has even been described by thousand year old Chinese texts as providing “an intermediate dimension between mundane and transcendent reality.”

Physically, Reishi is a strengthening cardiovascular remedy that also has, among myriad other benefits, immunomodulating properties and a calming, restorative effect on the nervous system. But it’s the near indescribable sense of otherworldly tranquility that Reishi imparts on the mind and spirit that makes it so deeply profound. Reishi and mushrooms in general help to remind us how truly interconnected we are with the universe, elucidating our consciousness with their web-like mycelial wisdom. Try Reishi as a tincture or a decoction (long boiled tea).

Gotu Kola for Increasing Intuitive Awareness

Gotu Kola (Centella asiatica), also sometimes referred to as ‘Brahmi’ in northern Indian culture, is considered a Sattvic herb in the Ayurvedic healing tradition, meaning it promotes subtle awareness and spiritual enhancement. Gotu Kola, like Reishi, is considered a ‘Shen tonic’ in Traditional Chinese Medicine as well. Its common name, Brahmi, translates loosely to “god-like,” and it is considered to be an herb that uplifts the psyche and increases intuition. Gotu Kola has been proven to raise oxygen uptake levels in the brain and encourage trans-hemispheric synchronization, which shifts the brainwave state into the alpha, gamma and theta spectrum. This spectrum is associated with consciousness expansion and has been studied in long-term meditators.

Gotu Kola is very reparative to nerves and tissues, taking it over a period of time can rejuvenate nerve pathways in the body and brain, and work to dilate the pineal gland. This time-tested herb can help us to achieve deep states of meditation and sharpen our intuitive awareness. Gotu Kola makes a lovely tea, and can be eaten or juiced, too.

Lavender for Aligning Your Third Eye

Lavender (Lavandula angustifolia) is a popular and well-loved herb in our Western world. Its floral scent and soothing qualities are familiar to nearly everyone, regardless of their awareness of herbal medicines. Lavender is often used as a meditation aid as it quiets the chatter of the mind and, therefore, the ego. It is said that Lavender resonates with the sixth chakra, Ajna, located in the “third eye” area of the forehead, between the eyebrows. The Ajna chakra is considered the center of foresight, intuition, contemplation, and enlightenment, and is associated with the eyes, brain, pineal gland, and nervous system.

As a relaxant nervine, Lavender has proven calming and rejuvenating effects on the nervous system. Its specific indication is for those who seem to always be in a stressed state, with a constantly wrinkled forehead. Ancient knowledge considers Lavender to promote deeper spiritual understanding, psychic insight, and intuitive visions. In addition, Lavender will help to cast away any doubts about embracing our spiritual power. A versatile herb, Lavender can be consumed as a tea, taken as a tincture, smudged, added to the bath, or made into a dream sachet for under the pillow.

Ginkgo for Access to Ancient Wisdom

Ginkgo tree (Ginkgo biloba) is perhaps one of the most ancient remedies known to humankind, with fossils dating back about 200 million years. Records of its use in Traditional Chinese Medicine date back 5,000 years - members of the royal court used it to ward off senility. High in antioxidant compounds and terpenes, Ginkgo helps to increase circulation and blood flow to the brain and extremities. As one of the most studied botanicals in the world, it’s been shown to prevent and aid the symptoms of Alzheimer’s and Dementia. In a similar vein, we can work with Ginkgo to gain access to long forgotten, ancient wisdom. Ginkgo trees were considered sacred elders in ancient China, according to medical scholar Li Shizhen, Taoists carved their spells and symbols on old ginkgo wood to gain access to the spirit world. Ginkgo is thought to assist in utilizing all parts of the brain - all parts of the tree can be used - and is an indispensible herb for honing mental acuity. Ginkgo trees are a universal symbol of longevity and the cyclical renewal of nature. A Ginkgo tree was the first of any life to regrow after the Hiroshima bombing, just 800 meters away from the center of the devastating nuclear explosion. Ginkgo leaves can be taken as a tincture or brewed in a tea.

Blue Lotus for Opening the Crown Chakra

Blue Lotus (Nymphaea caerulea) is actually not a lotus flower at all, but rather, a blue water lily. Sacred to the ancient Egyptians, and revered in cultures across the globe as a holy symbol, Blue Lotus was traditionally prized for its beautiful perfume and the dreamy trance state it would induce when inhaled. Blue Lotus can be seen in a huge amount of ancient Egyptian art, usually depicting persons inhaling the flower. As a sedative herb with antispasmodic and anticonvulsant properties, the effects of Blue Lotus are euphoric, and gently calm the nervous system and relax the whole body, allowing one to experience joy and light that are expressed through ethereal awareness. The physical effects are subtle but intensely spiritual. It is thought that Blue Lotus may enhance pineal gland function and provoke longer states of deep meditation. In meditative practice, Blue Lotus is said to allow one to see behind the mind’s eye by activating the 3rd eye. Blue Lotus is also known to motivate lucid dreaming. Blue Lotus can be enjoyed as a smoke, or steeped and consumed as a tea. An ancient, ceremonial preparation involves steeping the flowers in wine to make a kind of tincture.
